Police launch murder inquiry after 12-year-old girl is killed in Liverpool city centre

A 12-year-old girl was killed after being stabbed in the neck on a busy night in Liverpool city centre.

The girl was found suffering serious injuries shortly after 4.15pm on Thursday and paramedics were forced to resuscitate her after she was taken to hospital.

The Liverpool Echo newspaper said she had died but the North West ambulance service said she was still receiving support at the city’s Alder Hey children’s hospital but her family were said to be “overcome with grief”.

Detective Inspector Jo Murray of Merseyside police’s major incident team said: “Jayden is reported to have been approached by a man who she has mistaken for a father. We believe he has been in the George Square area around the time of the incident.”

A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of murder and was being questioned.

Murray said: “We are treating this as a murder investigation and we are keen to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious in the George Square area late on Thursday afternoon.

“I would ask anyone who was in the George Square area around 4.15pm who may have heard or seen anything to get in touch with police as soon as possible. If you have any information, no matter how insignificant you think it is, then please call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
